What is NOC?

The National Occupational Classification (NOC) is Canada's national system for describing occupations. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses the 2021 version of the NOC to identify and categorize jobs according to the training, education, experience and responsibilities (TEER) required.

What are TEER Categories?

In 2022, Canada switched from skill levels (0, A, B, C, D) to TEER categories. TEER stands for:

The new system has 6 categories (TEER 0 to 5). To be eligible for Express Entry programs (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades), your work experience usually needs to fall under TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3.

TEER Categories Explained

TEER Type of Job Examples
TEER 0 Management occupations Advertising managers, Financial managers, Mine managers
TEER 1 Occupations that usually require a university degree Software engineers, Financial advisors, Journalists
TEER 2 Occupations that usually require a college diploma, apprenticeship training of 2 or more years, or supervisory occupations Computer network technicians, Medical laboratory technologists
TEER 3 Occupations that usually require a college diploma, apprenticeship training of less than 2 years, or more than 6 months of on-the-job training Bakers, Dental assistants, Photographers
*TEER 4 and 5 occupations are generally not eligible for Express Entry, but may be eligible for other programs like the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) or the Atlantic Immigration Program.
